Classes

You will be notified once your class is scheduled. Preparing for Childbirth

The NYU Medical Center Preparing for Childbirth Program is an eight-session course which includes:

  • Healthy Pregnancy — This two-hour class, taught by a certified childbirth educator, discusses the development of the fetus and common discomfort and relief measures. Nutrition during pregnancy is reviewed by a registered dietician. A film on fetal development is shown.
  • Prepared Childbirth — This course, consisting of seven two-hour weekly sessions based on the Lamaze Method, is designed to prepare parents for labor and delivery. The program covers: anatomy and physiology of labor and delivery; variations and complications in labor and delivery; Cesarean birth; pain management options; what to expect during your stay at Tisch Hospital; feeding options; and a tour of birthing rooms and postpartum unit. Films on actual labor and delivery experiences are included. One session will be devoted to INFANT CARE. This two-hour class teaches you how to care for your baby. You will diaper and bathe a "baby" while learning to survive the first few weeks at home. To ensure class availability, please register by your 20th week. Class size is limited.

    $235 per couple.

 

Accelerated Prepared Childbirth

This two-session, twelve-hour accelerated program is offered to couples who are unable to attend the weekly course. The same information is covered in two intensive sessions. Infant Care is also included. SPACE IS LIMITED. PLEASE REGISTER EARLY

$235 per couple.

 

Prepared Childbirth Review

This three-hour course, taught by a certified childbirth educator, is offered to couples who have completed the Prepared Childbirth course within the last three years. This refresher course reviews previously learned skills and information. It is not adequate for couples having their first baby.

$80 per couple.

 

Sibling Class

This one-hour class is offered to brothers and sisters of the new baby and includes discussion, educational play, and a tour of the newborn nursery and postpartum unit. Designed for children ages three and older.

$25 if you are NOT enrolled in the NYU Medical Center Review course.
FREE if you are enrolled.

 

Cesarean Birth

This two-hour class, taught by a certified childbirth educator, is offered to couples scheduled for Cesarean birth. It will familiarize you with Tisch Hospital’s policies on Cesarean births and the procedures that are followed both before and after delivery.

$100 per couple.

 

Breastfeeding Class

This two-and-a-half hour class for expectant mothers (coaches are welcome to attend) is taught by a lactation consultant. It is designed to discuss the benefits of breastfeeding as well as provide practical information on breastfeeding. Proper breastfeeding techniques are also discussed. A separate breastfeeding class is available for expectant mothers of multiples.

$40 if taking NYU Medical Center Childbirth course.
$80 if not taking NYU Medical Center Childbirth course.

 

Obstetric Anesthesia Seminars

A one-hour seminar on epidurals and spinals is presented monthly by Gilbert J. Grant, MD, Director of Obstetric Anesthesia at N.Y.U. Medical Center. Dr. Grant will discuss your options for pain relief for labor and delivery, and you will have the opportunity to ask questions. There is no charge for the seminar, and no need for reservations. Your labor partner is also invited. You may attend the seminar that is most convenient for you. Support Groups and Seminars

Breastfeeding Support Group

This weekly support group for new mothers offers encouragement and feedback on breastfeeding your newborn. You will have the opportunity to breastfeed your baby with guidance from a lactation consultant in addition to sharing experiences with other new mothers. $100; Four-month registration.

 

Getting a Good Start Parenting Workshop

Join us for a free 90-minute seminar about enjoying parenting and being a better parent. This workshop, led by child development experts, will provide insights about what your baby is experiencing, the many ways your baby communicates, your baby's moods and personality, and how best to relate to your baby. Infant & Child CPR and First Aid & Child Safety Course (Newborns to 8 Years Old)

This 4-hour course is designed to teach parents, caregivers, grandparents and friends Infant Child and CPR according to the American Heart Association guidelines. It also includes an overview of First Aid and Child Safety, and is taught by AHA certified instructors.
