Maternal-Fetal Therapy

Maternal-Fetal TherapyNYU Langone Medical Center’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine Program specializes in fetal diagnosis, treatment, and fetal surgery. The program is unique because of the exceptional facilities for fetal diagnosis and treatment and personnel skilled at performing surgical procedures for treatment of the fetus at risk.

The program utilizes an endoscopic approach in performing surgical procedures on a fetus at risk and state-of-the-art fetal diagnostic personnel and equipment. It is a multidisciplinary program involving personnel from many departments.

The Maternal-Fetal Therapy Program performs the following:

  • Intrauterine transfusion
  • Fetal bladder and chest shunts
  • Umbilical cord ligation in TRAP syndrome, where one of a set of twins is abnormal
  • Laser coagulation of communicating placental vessels in twin transfusion syndrome
  • Cord ligation for the moribund twin in twin transfusion syndrome of other twin
  • Closure of preterm ruptured membranes before the time of viability

Eligible patients will be seen under approved protocols and evaluated by the fetal diagnostic tests available through the Prenatal Diagnostic Unit and the Human Genetics Program. Consultation with the other services at the NYU Langone Medical Center and extensive counseling will be provided as necessary for each case.
