Labor & Delivery

Once you are admitted to the Labor & Delivery Unit, your nurse and obstetrician will be monitoring your labor progress and your baby’s heart rate. We believe in family-centered birth and encourage your partner to be by your side during your labor and delivery. You are permitted two support persons to remain with you in Labor & Delivery. All other family members and friends are asked to remain in the waiting room located outside Labor & Delivery.
Nurses, a family member, or your doula, if you chose to hire one, will assist you with a variety of comfort measures such as walking, showering, breathing techniques and relaxation.
An anesthesiologist is on call 24 hours a day if you would like pain relief or anesthesia for delivery.
Once your baby is born, your baby will be placed skin to skin with you. The familiar sound, smells, taste, and warmth of your skin helps the baby know he/she is safe. Our nurses are trained to help you with breastfeeding. If you are planning to breastfeed, we encourage you to breastfeed your baby within one hour of birth. Babies seem most alert and ready to feed at this time. You and your baby will begin to bond during this recovery process. Your partner, family and loved ones can share in the joy after the birth of your baby. Together you will be transferred to the Mother-Baby Unit.
During labor you will be in one of the ten private birthing rooms (LDRs) which allow you to labor, deliver, and recover in the same room with a warm, homelike setting.
A CD player, VCR, TV, refrigerator, private showers, and state-of-the-art obstetrical equipment are available in each room. You may want to pack a favorite movie or CDs in anticipation of your labor.
