Volunteer Opportunities

NYU Medical Center proudly engages hundreds of volunteers each month throughout the hospital center, making it a friendlier, more comfortable and more efficient place for patients, visitors and staff. NYU Medical Center’s comprehensive array of services and research centers provides a diverse range of volunteer opportunities.

Here is a brief listing of the volunteer positions that are currently available on the maternity service. Positions provide volunteers with patient and/or staff interaction, skill development, and exposure to medical, research, clerical and clinic environments.

  • Liaison on the Patient Advisory Council — We are looking for new moms and/or dads who had their babies at NYU Medical Center to be a part of our Patient Advisory Council. This committee meets with our Hospital and Medical Leadership over dinner to discuss their experiences while they were in the hospital and to provide guidance on some of our potential new programs. This committee is very valuable to the hospital in monitoring and improving the care that we deliver on a daily basis.
  • Post Partum / Discharge Helpers — Volunteers help new moms as they are discharged from the hospital. Volunteers help dress the baby, help mom as she learns new mothering skills, assist with the discharge paperwork, assist with escort, and help family gather everything (including gifts, new supplies, mom’s stuff, etc.) for their trip home.

In order to apply, we follow the model of our employment office and screen volunteer applicants. This process ensures that volunteers are well matched with departments, aiming for optimum staff and volunteer satisfaction. This results in successful volunteer programs.

  1. Fill out the application and submit it to the Volunteer office.
  2. The Volunteer office will call you to discuss your application.
  3. If there are open positions that interest you at the time you apply, you’ll be invited in for an interview.
  4. If in the interview it is determined that your interests, skills, schedule and experience match up with a current position openings(s), you will be referred to that department(s) for a second interview.
  5. If you are accepted as a volunteer for that particular department, you will then need to obtain medical clearance.
  6. Finally, you will complete paperwork with the Volunteer Services Department and obtain a photo ID.

For more information or to complete an application, please contact the Volunteer Services Department during business hours (Monday — Friday, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.) at 212-263-6100 or via email at rebecca.randel@med.nyu.edu.

Faculty & Friends Campaign

The Annual Faculty & Friends campaign grew out of the special relationship between the patients and the physicians of NYU Medical Center. With personal gifts from our physicians and their patients, Faculty & Friends has created the most successful campaign of its kind in any American medical institution, generating more than $60 million in unrestricted funds since its inception since 1980.

For 20 years, the joint efforts of patients and physicians have produced a growing cadre of supporters who have created the Medical Center's living endowment. The 1999-2000 campaign, which ended August 31, 2000, generated more than $3.6 million in funds which were applied to a wide range of programs in patient care, research and medical education.
